With Hollywood United departing for a rival league, the Ventura County Fusion might have figured they were in a two-team battle for the Premier Development League's Southwest Division title this year.

They would have been correct.

Only the other team isn't Orange County Blue Star.

The Fusion made that clear Friday night with a 7-2 pasting at Ventura College, running their record to 4-0-1. That's only worth second place -- Fresno Fuego, apparently their chief competition, is a point better, at 4-0-2.

The teams drew, 0-0, May 1 in Ventura and meet again June 11 in Fresno.

They're in another battle this week, for the division's berth in the U.S. Open Cup. Fresno won all four of its qualifying matches, and the Fusion is 3-0-0 heading into Saturday's PDL match against the Southern California Seahorses at La Mirada High School. Ventura County will advance if it wins by two or more goals or by one goal while scoring at least three. A 2-1 win forces a coin flip, a 1-0 win, draw or loss sends Fresno through.

Thousand Oaks' Danny Barrerra (Westlake HS/UC Santa Barbara) played the key role against Blue Star, setting up two goals -- his league-best fifth and sixth assists -- and scoring the finale.

The Seahorses are 2-1-0, although the victories are against winless teams that have been outscored, 23-2. The L.A. Blues' reserve side was Saturday's victim and have been shut out in all four of its games.

NPSL: Milan Radovic (Chatsworth HS/Cal State Northridge) scored twice in the dying minutes as Thousand Oaks' FC Hasental overcame a late two-goal deficit for a 3-2 win at Sacramento. Rafael Garcia (Canoga Park HS/Cal State Northridge) started the comeback in the 70th minute, then set up Radovich's 86th-minute equalizer. The winner arrived in stoppage.

The Santa Ana Winds made it six in a row, with Greg Piechota (Cal State Dominguez Hills) and Adan Coronado (Artesia HS/Cerritos College) tallying to beat Real San Jose. Hollywood United hit five goals for the fourth time in five matches in a romp over Bay Area Ambassadors.

WPSL: The big winners on the first full weekend, played entirely on the NorCal clubs' fields, were the Orange County Waves, San Diego SeaLions, Marin County-based North Bay FC Wave and Livermore-based West Coast Wildkatz.

The Waves held partner club Bay Area Breeze to a 1-1 draw, then routed the San Francisco Nighthawks, 6-0 -- with Kristina Larsen (Mission Viejo HS/UCLA) scoring a hat trick to win WPSL Player of the Week honors -- to take the early lead in the Pacific-South.

The SeaLions upset the Breeze, but lost to North Bay, which was one of two teams to win Saturday and Sunday. The Wildkatz, run out of former San Jose Earthquakes star Troy Dayak's club, held L.A. Premier and Ajax America, two of the league's better sides, to draws.

USL W-LEAGUE: UCLA's Sydney Leroux is playing in her hometown for the Vancouver Whitecaps; she scored the lone goal in their win over Seattle. … Englishwoman Cherelle Khassal tallied twice as L.A. Strikers won two of three last week. They face archrival Santa Clarita Blue Heat on Sunday night at Pasadena City College. … Blue Heat won its opener on Cal State L.A. All-American Liz Franco's 89th-minute goal.

USL PRO: Palmdale's Max Griffin (Littlerock HS/UCLA) struck again, scoring the 90th-minute winner in Orlando City FC's 3-1 victory at Harrisburg, his league-best sixth of the season. … The week's most intriguing result: Wilmington Hammerheads battering the Charleston Battery, 3-0, to go to 4-1-0 as Luke Mulholland struck twice. … L.A. Blues (5-2-2) top the National Division with 17 points, seven more than second-place Rochester, but they're off from league play until June 24. The Rhinos have six games -- as many as 18 points -- in that span.
