It's official: The Galaxy will meet the winner of next week's U.S. Open Cup second-rounder between the L.A. Blues and Ventura County Fusion, and the game will be played at Cal State Fullerton.
U.S. Soccer released third-round pairings, sites, dates and times Wednesday, and everything played out as expected for the local clubs, with the Galaxy getting the survivor of next Tuesday's clash at Ventura College when Major League teams enter the fray on June 28.
The winner would take on the Seattle Sounders, winners of the last two Open Cups, in the July 12 quarterfinals.
The Blues, who play in the third-tier USL Pro, topped Hollywood United FC, 3-1, in a first-round game Tuesday in Norco. The Fusion, from the national semipro/amateur Premier Development League, held off local amateurs Doxa Italia, 3-1, in Ventura.
The Galaxy has used Cal State Fullerton's Titan Stadium on several occasions for friendlies and games in the Open Cup, America's oldest and most prestigious club competition, dating to 1914. The Blues, in their first season as a professional club, play most of their home league games at Fullerton.
The Galaxy won the Open Cup in 2001 and 2005. The victor receives a berth in the CONCACAF Champions League.
Seven of eight MLS clubs will be at home for the third round, with the eighth -- Chicago Fire -- home if Harrisburg wins an all-USL Pro second-round game against Rochester and headed to upstate New York if the Rhinos prevail.
All MLS clubs except the Galaxy and Sounders will play at their home stadiums. The Sounders will meet Real Colorado Foxes or Kitsap Pumas, both from the PDL, at its secondary complex in suburban Tukwila.
