Bardsley, Boxx will start WPS All-Star Game

Chino Hills' Karen Bardsley and Redondo Beach's Shannon Boxx are headed to Women's Professional Soccer's June 30 All-Star Game. Bardsley, the goalkeeper for New Jersey's Sky Blue FC, and Boxx, who last week joined the Bay Area's FC Gold Pride, were among 22 starters the league announced Tuesday.

Boxx, the No. 5 overall vote-getter in weighted balloting from players, coaches, media and fans, is among four former L.A. Sol players on the list and one of six who were playing for Saint Louis Athletica before the club folded two weeks ago.

FC Gold Pride forward Marta and Philadelphia defender Allison Falk played for the Sol last season. Atlanta goalkeeper Hope Solo, defender Tina Ellertson, midfielder Lori Chalupny and forward Eniola Aluko starred for Athletica.

Japanese midfielder Aya Miyama, like Boxx, went to Saint Louis in the dispersal draft following the L.A. Sol's demise in January. She is a free agent and will be replaced on the All-Star team unless she signs with another club by Thursday.

Other players with local ties on the team: top vote-getter Abby Wambach, a Washington forward who owns a home in Hermosa Beach; Boston striker Lauren Cheney, a rookie from UCLA; and Catherine Whitehill, who lived in Los Angeles when her husband was in medical residency.

Most of the U.S. women's national team players on the roster -- there are 13: Boxx, Wambach, Whitehill, Cheney, Solo, Chalupny, Ellertson, Gold Pride's Rachel Buehler, Boston's Kristine Lilly and Amy LePeilbet, Sky Blue's Heather O'Reilly and Brittany Taylor, and Philadelphia's Lori Lindsey -- lived in Southern California during U.S. Soccer's pre-Women's World Cup and pre-Olympic residencies in 2007 and 2008.

Bardsley, the best goalkeeper in WPS this season, starred at Ayala High School and Cal State Fullerton. Boxx played at South Torrance High School and Notre Dame.

Players will be divided between the teams in a June 28 “playground pick-'em” with captains Wambach and Marta. Reserves will be announced later this month.

The All-Star Game will be played in Kennesaw, Ga., and televised by Fox Soccer Channel.
