The Ventura County Fusion on Friday wrapped up a week of friendlies with the most one-sided of the encounters, and that's not a good thing. Argentina's Independiente put on a clinic in front of 750 at Oxnard College, dominating every phase of the match in a 3-0 victory.
That shouldn't be a surprise, given how thick the Fusion's schedule has been the last few weeks, heightened by friendlies last weekend against England's West Bromwich Albion (a 4-2 defeat) and Wednesday against New Zealand's under-20 national team (a 2-1 win).
The Fusion completes its Premier Development League regular season Saturday night at Ventura College against the L.A. Legends with a slim chance of catching the Fresno Fuego for the Southwest Division title. Either way, they'll join the Fuego and two clubs from the Pacific Northwest in next week's Western Conference playoffs.
Leonel Nuñez scored in the 22nd minute, Facundo Parra in the 43rd and Ivan Perez in the 74th for Independiente. It would have been 4-0, but Brian Nieva fired wide left on a penalty kick in the 52nd.
Callum Riley came close twice for the Fusion, hitting the post from 30 yards 21 minutes in and missing an open net in the 54th.
