  • TELEVISION

MEXICAN PRIMERA DIVISION
San Luis at Pumas UNAM
Telemundo (KVEA/Channel 52), 10 a.m.

Hard to figure out what Pumas' bosses were thinking after winning the Primera Division Clausura title in May. Yes, theirs was an aging side, but some the giveaways -- Israel Castro and Leandro Augusto, say -- made no sense. San Luis is ripe to expose the folly in an Apertura opener.
Also
Gallos Blancos de Queretaro at America, TeleFutura (KFTR/Channel 46), 2 p.m.
Monterrey at Jaguares, Azteca America (KAZA/Channel 54) and Fox Deportes, 4 p.m.
Brazilian Brasileirão Petrobras
Palmeiras at Fluminense, GolTV, noon and 7 p.m.

COPA AMERICA
Uruguay vs. Paraguay
Univision (KMEX/Channel 34), noon
This ought to be a crowning achievement for Diego Forlan, Luis Suarez and the other World Cup semifinalists from Uruguay, who, as last year in South Africa, went further in South America's nations championship than Brazil or Argentina. Paraguay hasn't lost in the tournament. It hasn't won either -- three draws in group play, penalty-kick triumphs in the quarter- and semifinals.

CLUB FRIENDLY
Manchester City (England) at Galaxy
ESPN and ESPN Deportes, 1 p.m.
The Galaxy hope to keep this one closer than last week's one-sided loss to Real Madrid, but the English F.A. Cup champs, who finished third in the English Premier League, have a lot of quality, more than L.A. usually faces.
Also
Chelsea (England) at Thailand All-Stars, Fox Soccer Channel, 3:30 and 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.; Fox Deportes, 7 a.m.

WOMEN'S PROFESSIONAL SOCCER
Western New York Flash at Boston Breakers
Fox Soccer Channel, 3 p.m.
Diamond Bar's Alex Morgan returned from a superb World Cup showing to the Flash for a midweek win over magicJack. Now she takes on the Breakers, which have a five U.S. stars returning from Germany, including rising star Lauren Cheney. Replay: 8 p.m.

  • ON LOCAL FIELDS

CLUB FRIENDLY
Manchester City (England) at Galaxy
Home Depot Center, 1 p.m.

It's not the club Man United favorite/fan David Beckham prefers, but even he'll acknowledge the Blues are bringing a lot of firepower into the clubs' World Football Challenge exhibition -- even with Carlos Tevez almost certainly on his way out.
TV: ESPN and ESPN Deportes

USL W-LEAGUE
Vancouver Whitecaps at Santa Clarita Blue Heat
College of the Canyons (Santa Clarita), 7 p.m.
The Blue Heat have put together a remarkable sophomore season, with Edite Fernandes, Liz Franco, Hannah Beard and Stacey Rodwell making huge contributions. A victory in the Western Conference championship game will send them to next week's W-League finals in Seattle.
