Galaxy loss eliminates Goats
By Scott French
Chivas USA's archrival found a way to kill off the Goats before the SuperClasico showdown later this month. By losing.
A tired, short-handed Galaxy was beaten, 2-0, Tuesday night at New York, and a byproduct was the Goats' and San Jose's eliminations from the Major League Soccer playoff chase.
The Galaxy (18-4-10), which has 12 days off before the Oct. 16 faceoff with Chivas at Home Depot Center, could have clinched the Supporters' Shield with a victory. New York (9-7-16) climbed to ninth with 43 points, ahead of Houston on goal difference.
Ten teams make the playoffs, and Chivas (8-12-12) can get only to 42 points. San Jose's ceiling is 41. Toronto FC, New England and Vancouver were previously eliminated.
