Best Bets Oct. 6/7: What to watch

Portland at BYU
Fox Soccer Channel, 6 p.m.
The Pilots, a struggling-at-the-moment national powerhouse, welcomes BYU to the West Coast Conference. Replay: midnight

Real Salt Lake at Vancouver Whitecaps
MLS Direct Kick, 6:30 p.m.

RSL has lost three in a row but seems unlikely to lose its hold on the No. 3 spot in the West, especially with a win over the lowly 'Caps. Question is: Does RSL really want to finish third? That means Seattle in the playoffs. Dropping to fourth would add one must-win game to the schedule, but the Eastern Conference bracket will be much more pliable. COLLEGE WOMEN
San Diego at Pepperdine
Tari Frahm Rokus Field (Malibu), 3 p.m.

The eighth-ranked Waves are unbeaten heading into their West Coast Conference schedule, thanks to stingy defense and the play up front of Fresno-area products Anisa Guajardo and Lynn Williams.
UC Davis at UC Riverside, 7 p.m.
College men
Caltech at La Sierra (Riverside), 7 p.m.

Spain at Czech Republic
ESPN Deportes, 11:40 a.m.

Spain, the reigning champs in this competition as well as the World Cup, has already booked its trip to Poland and the Ukraine. The Czechs are battling Scotland for a spot in a playoff that would determine another berth, and that will surely be decided in Tuesday's qualifying finales.
Sweden at Finland, ESPN Deportes, 9 a.m.
England at Montenegro, ESPN Deportes, 1:55 p.m.
Italy at Serbia, ESPN Deportes, 4 p.m.
International friendly
Brazil at Costa Rica, ESPN Deportes, 6:55 p.m.

Monterrey at Estudiantes Tecos
Galavision, 6:10 p.m.
Monterrey has fallen to 13th place with just one win in its past seven Apertura matches, an unseemly neighborhood for the mighty Rayados. Guadalajara's Owls have been better on the road (four wins) than at home (1-4-0 record).
College men
San Diego at Portland, Fox Soccer Channel, 7 p.m.
Australian A League
Sydney FC at Melbourne Victory, Fox Soccer Channel, 12:30 a.m. COLLEGE WOMEN
Cal Poly at Cal State Northridge
Matador Soccer Field (Northridge), 7 p.m.

Cynthia Jacobo, the best goalkeeper in the W-League last summer, came up big last week as the Matadors opened Big West Conference play with a win and a tie. Cal Poly, always in the conference title chase, must bounce back from a 6-0 loss to Long Beach State.
UC Santa Barbara at UC Irvine, 7 p.m.
