COLLEGE: No. 7 UCI on top in Big West

UC Irvine took command of the Big West Conference race Saturday night, using two second-half goals by Miguel Ibarra to beat visiting Cal State Northridge, 2-0.
The match was a showdown between two of the Big West's three two-win teams and sent the seventh-ranked Anteaters (11-2-0) to 3-1, ahead of Northridge (5-5-1) at 2-1 and UC Davis at 2-2.
Ibarra (Lancaster/Lancaster HS) gave Irvine a 58th-minute lead through a give-and-go with Jimmy Turner (Mission Viejo/Misson Viejo HS) and a deflection off a Matadors defender. Memo Licona (Lake Forest/Laguna Hills HS) set up the second goal in the 89th minute.
In other men's action:
Sam Garza scored in the seventh minute of overtime, and No. 19 UC Santa Barbara (8-3-1) toppled UC Davis, 2-1, for its first Big West victory. The Gauchos lost their first two conference games, to UC Riverside and UC Irvine, but bounced back Wednesday with a 3-2 overtime victory over third-ranked Akron.
Osvaldo Bastida (Anaheim/Katella HS) scored in the first half for Cal Baptist (7-4-0) in a 1-0 win over Western Washington at the Grand Canyon Tournament in Phoenix.
Redlands (11-3-0) is closing in on the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title following a 2-0 victory at second-place Pomona-Pitzer (6-5-0) on goals by Alex Laughton and Will Walker. The Bulldogs are 8-0-0 in SCIAC play; the Sagehens fell to 5-2-0.
Jared Bernstein's hat trick led Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (7-3-1) in a 7-1 SCIAC rout of visiting Cal Lutheran (1-11-0).
Douglas Pentland's header from a corner kick carried Occidental (4-7-0) to a 1-0 SCIAC win over visiting Caltech (1-9-0).
Ryan Estrada (La Palma/Kennedy HS) scored 90 seconds into the second half to lift La Verne (3-6-1) to a 1-0 SCIAC win at Whittier (4-6-0).
Jorge Serrano (Sylmar/Sylmar HS) scored in the second half, and The Master's (7-1-3), No. 24 in the NAIA rankings, scored a 1-1 draw with No. 5 Azusa Pacific (7-2-1). Nathan Nienhuis scored in the 30th minute for APU, which fell to 0-1-1 in the Golden State Athletic Conference.
Irishman Kevin Cornwall's 83rd-minute strike carried No. 19 Vanguard (8-4-0) to a 3-2 victory over visiting Hope International (3-5-1). Nikola Ilich twice gave the Lions leads, but Hope rallied as Towson transfer Zach Hoffer (Temecula/Great Oak) scored and assisted a goal by former high school teammate Matthew Howard.
Edgar Orozco (Santa Ana/Santa Ana HS, Corona HS and Golden West College) and William Prado (Anaheim/Loara HS and Long Beach City College) assisted each other's goals eight minutes apart as No. 11 Concordia (9-1-0) edged Westmont, 2-1, in a GSAC clash in Santa Barbara.
Zach Bautista (Orange/Villa Park HS), Daniel Chew (Lake Forest/El Toro HS) and Dylan Wingrove tallied as Biola (7-2-2) romped to a 3-0 GSAC victory at San Diego Christian.
WOMEN: Pepperdine strikes early vs. BYU
Freshman Lynn Williams scored 96 seconds into the game, and No. 8 Pepperdine held on for a 1-0 West Coast Conference victory at Brigham Young.
Williams tallied from a through ball from Laura Cole (Whittier/La Habra HS) to quiet a crowd of 2,259 in Provo, Utah, and start the Waves toward their second win to start their WCC campaign.
Pepperdine, which is on a program-record 15-game unbeaten streak, faces PCH Cup rival Loyola Marymount next Saturday in Westchester.

Ashlin Steele scored in the 62nd minute and Whittier's beleaguered defense came up with a gem to upset La Verne, 1-0, in SCIAC action at Damien High School in La Verne. The Poets (1-9-0) had been outscored, 30-1, in their previous four games and 45-5 for the season. La Verne fell to 2-7-2.
Freshman Taylor Will's 16th goal of the season, from a corner kick by Sinead Vaughn (Simi Valley/Royal HS), gave Cal Lutheran (11-1-0), No. 17 in the NCAA Division III rankings, a 1-0 triumph over visiting Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (4-5-2). The Regals are 5-0-0 in conference play; every other SCIAC team has at least three losses.
Fionna Connolly set up Samantha Rivera (Thousand Oaks/Thousand Oaks HS), then scored an 80th-minute winner as Redlands (7-3-1) rallied from a first-minute deficit for a 2-1 SCIAC victory over Pomona-Pitzer.
Molly Lavin's 57th-minute goal carried Azusa Pacific (6-1-1), ranked third in NAIA, to a 1-0 Golden State Athletic Conference win at No. 14 The Master's (7-5-0).
Jessica Austin (Altadena/Maranatha HS) scored her sixth goal of the year and Sarina Coutin (Saugus/Hart HS and College of the Canyons) and Chrissy King added second-half goals to send Biola (5-4-1) to a 3-1 GSAC victory at San Diego Christian.
Arianna Vaughn (West Covina/South Hills HS) scored both goals for No. 4 Concordia (9-2-1), which was upset, 3-2, in a GSAC contest at No. 25 Westmont.
Vanguard dictated play from start to finish, outshooting Hope International, 33-2 (with a 14-3 edge on corner kicks), but the Lions (8-1-1) needed an Amanda Couch goal 16 minutes into overtime to win the GSAC match. HIU fell to 2-6-0.
