COLLEGE: Farran leads CSUN past CSUF
By Scott French
Heidi Farran tallied early and Cal State Northridge's defense did the rest in a 1-0 victory Thursday night at Cal State Fullerton to grab a share of the Big West Conference lead in women's soccer.
Farran (San Pedro/San Pedro HS) scored in the eighth minute as the Matadors (6-7-2) set up a showdown Sunday against UC Irvine for sole possession first place in the conference.
Farran's off-kilter shot from a feed by Brielle Slepicoff (Saugus/Saugus HS) was one of just two shots CSUN put on target, but it limited Fullerton (7-8-2) to one shot on goal to extend its winning streak over the Titans to four games.
“When I got the pass, I thought about cutting it inside, but I saw two players, so I just took a swing,” Farran told her school's athletics website. “I was a little off-balance, but a goal is a goal, and I'll surely take it.”
The goal was Farran's team-best seventh of the season and her 12th in 3˝ seasons at Northridge, and it gave the Matadors a 4-1-1 conference record, even with UC Irvine, three points ahead of UC Davis and four in front of Long Beach State.
In other women´s action:
- Jaiden Thornock assisted Jennie Marshall's 71st-minute goal and added one of her own 15 minutes later as BYU pulled away in the second half to a 3-0 West Coast Conference victory over visiting Loyola Marymount (5-10-0).
