May 15/16: What to watch, where to go
TUESDAY, MAY 15
MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER
Portland Timbers at Houston Dynamo
MLS Direct Kick, 5:30 p.m.
The Dynamo opened new BBVA Compass Stadium on the weekend, with Brad Davis' marvelous goal beating D.C. United. The first night game at the downtown park is against a struggling Timbers team that has won just one of its last eight games.
U.S. OPEN CUP
WEDNESDAY, MAY 16
Ventura County Fusion at Fullerton Rangers
Santa Ana Stadium, 7:15 p.m.
This is familiar territory for the USL Premier Development League's Fusion, but the National Premier Soccer League's Rangers make their debut in America's oldest and most prestigious soccer tournament. The winner meets the L.A. Blues in the second round in another week.
UEFA U-17 CHAMPIONSHIP
Germany vs. Netherlands
GolTV, 9 a.m.
It's a rematch of last year's final, won by Holland, and the Germans have been unstoppable, winning all four of its games by shutout. The Dutch have conceded just one goal, and that was 196 minutes ago. Last year's scoreline -- 5-2 -- might be out of reach.
MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER
Colorado Rapids at D.C. United
MLS Direct Kick, 4:30 p.m.
The Rapids are pretty good at home but not much on the road, with four straight losses. D.C. had a seven-game unbeaten streak going until defeats at San Jose and Houston.
Corinthians (Brazil) at Vasco da Gama (Brazil)
Fox Deportes, 6 p.m.
Five of the six Brazilian clubs in South America's club championship made it to the knockout stage, and four of those five got to the quarterfinals -- and the only team that failed lost to countrymen. The winner here could get another Brazilian team in the semifinals (Santos), with another Brazilian side possibly waiting in the final (Fluminense).
Universidad de Chile (Chile) at Libertad (Paraguay), Fox Deportes, 3:30 p.m.
USL PREMIER DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE
Southern California Seahorses at Pali Blues
Palisades High School (Pacific Palisades), 7:30 p.m.
Pali looks for its first win after opening the season with a draw at Orange County Blue Star, then dropping its home opener to FC Tucson. La Mirada's Seahorses are playing their first game.
