June 30/July 1: What to watch, where to go

SATURDAY, JUNE 30
WOMEN'S INTERNATIONAL FRIENDLY
Canada at United States
NBC (KNBC/Channel 4), 10:30 a.m.

The send-off match for the U.S. women, who next month seek their fourth Olympic gold medal in London.

MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER
Galaxy at San Jose Earthquakes
ESPN and ESPN Deportes, 7 p.m.

The Galaxy is back, but the Quakes are the best team in MLS after winning last weekend at Real Salt Lake. They've got the league's top scorer (Chris Wondolowski, with 13 goals -- that's 47 over 2½ seasons -- and a knack for pulling out tight games at the finish, like in L.A. last month, when San Jose overcame a two-goal deficit to beat the Galaxy on former L.A. favorite Alan Gordon's stoppage-time goal. The game, at Stanford University's 50,000-seat stadium, is a sellout.

Santa Clarita needs to win to stay alive for an NPSL playoff berth. Thousand Oaks' Hasental looks to play spoiler as it nears the finish of a disappointing campaign.
USL Premier Development League
BYU Cougars at L.A. Misioneros, Carver Middle School (Los Angeles), 6 p.m.

SUNDAY, JULY 1

2012 EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP
Spain vs. Italy
ESPN and ESPN Deportes, 11:30 a.m.

The Spaniards with a win would become the first side ever to win three successive major championships, but they're hypnotic brand of possession soccer hasn't been so dominant without a true forward. The Italians have been outstanding -- especially Andrea Pirlo and, certainly in the semifinal win over Germany, the mercurial Mario Balotelli -- and outplayed Spain in a 1-1 tie in their group opener. Replay: ESPN Deportes, 3 p.m.

COPA LIBERTADORES SUB-20
Defensor Sporting (Uruguay) vs. River Plate (Argentina)
Fox Deportes, 4 p.m.
What a week for River Plate. The storied Buenos Aires club clinched the Primera B Nacional title to regain its spot in Argentina's top league (after relegation a year ago for the first time in its 110-year existence), and now it's youngsters can claim South America's title in Lima at the second under-20 championship.

Brazilian Brasileirão
Atletico Mineiro at Gremio, GolTV, 2:30 and 6:30 p.m. USL W-LEAGUE
Vancouver Whitecaps at Santa Clarita Blue Heat
Valencia High School (Valencia), 2 p.m.

The Whitecaps complete their three-game swing through SoCal with a rematch of last year's Western Conference final. Both sides need to win out to keep their remote postseason hopes alive.
