By Scott French
The U.S. opened the CONCACAF U-17 Championship on Monday with a 3-1 victory over Cuba, with Palmdale's Esteban Rodriguez scoring a goal and North Hollywood's Mario Rodriguez assisting Andrew Oliver's strike.
Esteban Rodriguez (Bell Gardens HS) and Mario Rodriguez (Poly HS in Sun Valley) were in Wilmer Cabrera's starting lineup for the Group B opener in Montego Bay, Jamaica. New Galaxy forward Jack McBean (Newport Beach/Corona del Mar HS) came on for Mario Rodriguez in the 73rd minute.
The U.S. wraps group play Friday against Panama, and a victory in the quarterfinals will clinch a berth at the June 18-July 10 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Mexico.
Alfred Koroma gave the U.S. a 27th-minute advantage, Oliver made it 2-0 from Mario Rodriguez's superb outlet pass in the first minute of the second half, and Esteban Rodriguez struck four minutes later. Frank Lopez scored Cuba's goal in the 68th.
Costa Rica beat Haiti, 3-1, in the Group A opener.
