GALAXY: Roma talk a 'waste,' Donovan says
By Scott French
Reports from Europe and Boston have AS Roma's new American owner readying to swoop in for Galaxy captain Landon Donovan, with a budget of more than $14 million to purchase his rights from Major League Soccer and plans to keep his $2.3 million salary intact.
"Oh, don't start with that," he said after L.A.'s training session Thursday morning. "Don't waste my time, guys."
Donovan's agent, Richard Motzkin, has denied any contact from Thomas DiBenedetto or any other representative of the Italian Serie A club -- reps for Michael Bradley, another supposed target, says the same thing -- and Galaxy coach Bruce Arena thinks the talk is ridiculous.
"Not one of these reports have ever been accurate ...," Arena said. "I'd give you the same answer every time. We've always told you that Landon's with the Galaxy, he's going to be playing with the Galaxy. ... [Going to Serie A] you're talking fiction. What's the point in discussing it."
To be fair, reports have not claimed contact has yet been made. DiBenedetto, who purchased the club last month, was hiring former Roma star Walter Sabatini this week as the club's sporting director, and reports -- by several European outlets and in the Boston Globe -- say he will be making arrangements to bring in the players.
Arena puts no stock in any of it.
"There's going to be more rumors as the year goes on," he said. "There always are. Why even bother?"
