GOLD CUP: Costa Rican defender killed
By Scott French
Dennis Marshall, a defender who scored Costa Rica's equalizer in last weekend's CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfinal against Honduras, was killed in a car crash Thursday 30 miles east of San Jose, the Central American country's capital.
Marshall, 25, and his girlfriend, Meylin Masis Castro, died in a head-on collision with a truck as they traveled from his grandfather's funeral, according to a report on Major League Soccer's website.
Marshall's goal last week forced overtime, but the Ticos were eliminated on penalty kicks. Honduras lost Wednesday night to Mexico in a semifinal in Houston. He was scheduled to return early next month to Denmark, where he played for Aalborg.
