TUESDAY, JULY 5
WOMEN'S WORLD CUP
France at Germany
ESPN, 11:30 a.m.
Les Bleus have been the story of this World Cup, especially that 4-0 shellacking of Canada. That put them on top in Group A over host/two-time defending champion/tournament favorite Germany, which has eked out wins over the Canadians and Nigeria.
England vs. Japan, ESPN, 9 a.m.
Mexico vs. New Zealand, ESPN2, 9 a.m.
Canada vs. Nigeria, ESPN2, 11:30 a.m.
MLS RESERVE LEAGUE
Seattle Sounders at Galaxy
Home Depot Center University Field 1 (Carson), 11 a.m.
The joys of watching Reserve League soccer come from seeing players close up -- some of them starters in the big games, too -- and hear what's being said on the field. (Warning: Cursing is involved!) It's also nice to see young players with talent that haven't played on MLS's big stage. Our favorite among that group, on the Galaxy, is Ivy Leaguer Dan Keat, a holding midfielder from New Zealand.
FIFA WOMEN'S WORLD CUP
United States vs. Sweden
ESPN, 11:30 a.m.
The Yanks are rolling along, with shutout victories over North Korea and Colombia, but need at least a draw in Wolfsburg against their toughest foe yet to win Group C and avoid Brazil in the quarterfinals. The alternative might be preferred to a semifinal showdown with the Germans. Replay: ESPN2, 6 p.m.
Equatorial Guinea vs. Brazil, ESPN, 8:45 a.m.
Australia vs. Norway, ESPN2, 8:45 a.m.
North Korea vs. Colombia, ESPN, 11:30 a.m
MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER
San Jose Earthquakes at Chivas USA
Home Depot Center (Carson), 7:30 p.m.
One win in eight games isn't good enough for the Goats, no matter how well they've played in spurts. And the Earthquakes have lost just once in 11 games since April.
