PREPS: Crescenta Valley stuns El Rancho

March, 3, 2012
El Rancho High School's quest for perfection fell at one of the last hurdles, courtesy of another unbeaten side.

Crescenta Valley scored goals four minutes apart in the first half, then defended gamely en route to a 3-0 upset of the top-seeded Dons, ending their 34-game unbeaten streak in the CIF-Southern Section Division 4 boys soccer final at Warren High School in Downey.

Alex Berger and Erik Keshishian provided the halftime advantage for the Falcons (20-0-7), which won their first Southern Section boys championship and claimed a berth in next week's CIF Southern California Regional championships, which also include top teams from the Los Angeles City, San Diego and Central Sections.

El Rancho (26-1-0), from Pico Rivera, was the defending champion and top seed and was fifth in ESPNHS's Fab 50 national rankings. It came into the final averaging nearly four goals.

“We knew we were going to have to beat El Rancho from the beginning of the year,” Crescenta Valley goalkeeper Nick Ruiz told the Whittier Daily News. “We just knew we were going to have to take them down. Winning has not set in, and I don't think it will set in for a couple of days. It's amazing. We expected a hard-fought game, but not the way it ended.”

PREPS: ECR, Palisades in title rematch

February, 29, 2012

Chatsworth High School was given a second chance when Granada Hills reported it had used an ineligible player in the CIF Los Angeles City Section girls soccer playoffs.

That chance didn't last long.

Top-seeded El Camino Real (21-2-2) romped into another title game, dismantling the Chancellors, 7-0, Wednesday evening to advance to Saturday afternoon's final against Palisades at Contreras Learning Center in downtown Los Angeles.

It's a rematch of last year's final, and ECR, from Woodland Hills, is looking for its 11th title in 12 years. Chatsworth holds the City Section record with 11 girls soccer championships. The Conquistadores have won their three playoff games by a combined 20-0 tally.

ECR romped to a 6-0 halftime lead as Dylann O'Connor scored two goals, and Zoe Fishman, Jackie Hilario and Carley McBeath each added a goal and an assist. It scored 20 goals in three shutout wins over the Chancellors this season.

Chatsworth (8-12-4) lost in overtime to Granada Hills in last week's quarterfinals, but the team was restored to the bracket when the Highlanders forfeited the victory Monday.

Palisades (17-4-0), from Pacific Palisades, won its semifinal Tuesday, with Katie van Daalen Wetters and Eve Babcock scoring in a 2-1 decision over Cleveland (13-9-5), from Reseda.

ECR won last year's matchup, 1-0, 27 minutes into overtime. Palisades' other trip to the final, in 2005, was a 4-0 loss to the Conquistadores.
