LOCALS: Rene Corona joins Hitmen's hat club

Hollywood United FC is mowing down most of the competition in the National Premier Soccer League, perhaps a little flummoxed that the level of the other teams -- San Diego Flash and perhaps Santa Ana Winds aside -- isn't quite what they saw most nights in the Premier Development League.

This week it was the Bay Area Ambassadors who took a beating, a 7-0 decision that kept HUFC (6-1-0) atop the Southwest Flight. The Hitmen, who scored six second-half goals, have struck 32 times in seven games, 30 in a five-game winning streak that has featured four shutouts.

Rene Corona (Corona/Centennial HS and Santa Ana College) was this week's hero, joining the Hitmen's hat-trick club with goals in the 19th, 58th and 78th minutes. Former Chivas USA winger Brent Whitfield (Long Beach/Poly HS and Cal State Fullerton) and Cuban forward Jose Miranda had registered three-goal games in HUFC's two previous encounters.

Whitfield scored twice and Miranda added a goal against Bay Area.

Santa Ana Winds extended its winning streak to four games with a 2-1 victory over Lancaster's Rattlers FC. Adan Coronado (Hawaiian Gardens/Artesia HS and Cerritos College) and Chen Yong Park scored the goals.

PDL: Orange County Blue Star and the Ventura County Fusion romped to big wins in the only Southwest Division action of the weekend in the USL Premier Development League.

Blue Star (2-0-0) routed pro side L.A. Blues 23, 5-0, as David Ponce (Foothill Ranch/Trabuco Hills HS and Loyola Marymount) and Luis Silva (Los Angeles/Salesian HS and UC Santa Barbara) both scored twice and UCLA's Chandler Hoffman added a goal and two assists.

The Fusion (1-0-1) toppled L.A. Legends, 6-1, as Danny Barrera (Westlake Village/Thousand Oaks HS and UC Santa Barbara) scored a goal and assisted three more.

USL PRO: Max Griffin did it again, scoring his fifth goal of the season to carry Orlando City FC past the Dayton Dutch Lions, 1-0. The former UCLA and Littlerock High School standout from Palmdale, whose brother, Leonard, plays for the L.A. Blues, shares the league lead in goals with Richmond's Matthew Delicate, whose fifth lifted the Kickers (6-0-0) to a 2-1 win over previously perfect Wilmington (2-1-0).

Antigua Barracuda (6-2-0) extended its lead over the Blues (3-1-1) in the International Division to eight points with two shutout wins -- its fourth and fifth in a row -- over River Plate Puerto Rico, which was one of three Puerto Rican teams ousted Tuesday from the USL Pro.

Puerto Rico United and Sevilla FC Puerto Rico also were dropped from the league; financial difficulties and medical issues with two of the three owners had prevented the clubs from meeting league standards. United Soccer Leagues officials said conferences would be realigned and the schedule redrawn this week.

USL W-LEAGUE: The USL's women's league kicks off this weekend, with Pali Blues -- the L.A. Blues' sister club -- taking on newcomers L.A. Strikers in a tripleheader Saturday at Cal State Fullerton. The women's game starts at 1, the Southern California Seahorses face the L.A. Legends in a PDL game at 4:30, and the Blues meet the Charlotte Battery in the USL Pro at 7:30.

The Battery and Seahorses are related, too. Both are owned by Missionary Athletes International, a Christian missionary group.

Greater L.A.'s other W-League team, the Santa Clarita Blue Heat, open on May 22. The Women's Premier Soccer League, a rival to the W-League, starts May 21.
