Los Angeles Soccer: MLS Goal of the Week

GALAXY: Beckham corner is MLS's top goal

July, 15, 2011
David Beckham's strike directly from a corner kick in last weekend's 2-1 victory over Chicago is Major League Soccer's Goal of the Week after a tight triumph in online voting at the league's website.

Beckham netted the winning goal in the 66th minute, just four minutes after Cristian Nazarit scored an equalizer for the Fire. He spun a corner kick low and to the near post, and it crept through a opening in the goalmouth and skipped past Chicago goalkeeper Sean Johnson en route to the far-post netting.

Beckham's goal received 37 percent of the vote among five finalists, with Fredy Montero's free kick in Seattle's 3-2 win at Portland finishing second. The week's best goal -- San Jose goalkeeper David Bingham's 90-yard boot against England's West Bromwich Albion -- wasn't eligible.

Beckham also won in Week 9 with a very different set piece.

Save of the Week: Donovan Ricketts

April, 29, 2011

Galaxy goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts won the vote for Major League Soccer's Save of the Week, the league announced Friday, for his superb 80th-minute foot save of Kenny Cooper's volley in last weekend's 3-0 victory over the Portland Timbers.

Two Galaxy goalscorers were up for the Goal of the Week award, but both were crushed by Juan Agudelo's volley against D.C. United, the New York Red Bulls teen striker's second such honor this season.

Ricketts edged out New York's Bouna Coundoul for the honor, which is determined by fan voting at the league's Web site after the week's save's are culled to five.

Real Salt Lake's Nick Rimando (Montclair/Montclair HS and UCLA) won the first week, and Seattle's Kasey Keller and Portland's Jake Gleeson split the past four.

Ricketts finished second to Keller in Week 4
