EUROPE: Matt Taylor has the hot foot

November, 8, 2010
Former Chivas USA forward Matt Taylor who has played in U.S. minor leagues and in Germany's lower divisions since leaving Major League Soccer in 2007, appears to have found a home at Rot Weiss Ahlen.

It could lead to another move, to a bigger club.

Taylor (Irvine HS/UCLA), who joined the third-tier 3.Bundesliga club in the traditional Muenster region of western Germany at the end of August, has scored four goals in his last three games as Rot Weiss has quickly climbed from 16th to ninth in the standings.

He netted the 81st-minute winner Saturday in a 2-1 victory at SV Jahn Regensburg, the Red and Whites' third successive victory after winning just once in their first 12 matches.

Taylor has six goals in nine games -- when he scores, Rot Weiss (4-4-7) is 4-0-0.

He tallied twice in a 3-0 win Sept. 18 over Carl Zeiss Jena, then started on his current streak two weeks ago with the second goal in a 3-2 triumph over Bayern Munich's second team. He scored two more last week in a 4-1 romp over SV Weben Wiesbaden.

EUROPE: Maurice Edu scores but is hurt, could miss Valencia clash

November, 2, 2010

Fontana's Maurice Edu scored an early goal but trotted off at halftime with a calf injury in Rangers FC's 1-1 draw with Inverness Caledonian Thistle, and he's likely to miss the Scottish champions' UEFA Champions League showdown Tuesday at Valencia.

Edu gave Rangers an 11th-minute lead with a top-corner blast from Steven Davis' long ball, but he was taken down by ICT's Richie Forlan in the 25th, returned following treatment but was clearly bothered, and joined Slovakian World Cup star Vladimir Weiss in a halftime departure. Weiss has a heel injury and also is unlikely for Tuesday's game.

Edu was the pivotal figure in the first Group C meeting with Valencia, a 1-1 draw in Glasgow in which he scored for both clubs. Rangers (1-0-2) is second in the group halfway through the schedule, two points behind Manchester United (2-0-1), with the Spaniards third at 1-1-1. Man U meets winless Bursaspor in Turkey.

Edu's week began with a tougher than expected 2-0 victory at Kilmarnock in the Scottish League Cup quarterfinals, setting up a Jan. 30 semifinal with Motherwell at Ibrox. Celtic and Aberdeen face off in the other semi.

A victory over ICT would have sent Rangers to 10-0-0 in the Premier League, the club's best start in 112 years, but Eric Odhiambo pulled Invernesss even in the 81st minute. The Blues are just one point ahead of archrival Celtic (9-1-0), which they beat six days earlier.

KLJESTAN ON TARGET: Sacha Kljestan (Huntington Beach HS) has rewarded RSC Anderlecht for his return to the lineup.
