UCLA right fielder Jeff Gelalich, fresh off a two-home run performance in an NCAA regional victory, was selected by the Cincinnati Reds Monday in the supplemental first round of the Major League Baseball draft.
Gelalich, a junior who is batting .372 with 11 home runs, was the No. 57 pick overall.
“You always dream about this happening, and when it does, you don’t know what to do,” Gelalich said in a statement. “It’s definitely surreal. This is what I have worked for my whole life. This is what I’ve dreamed of doing, and it’s what I’ve wanted to do. I feel really blessed.”
Gelalich was voted the outstanding player of the Los Angeles regional after batting .454 (5-for-11) with seven RBIs in three games. He had two home runs Sunday in a 13-5 victory over Creighton. He is the 18th UCLA player taken in the first or supplemental first round of the draft and the third in the last two seasons.
“Our program is very excited for Jeff and his family,” UCLA coach John Savage said. “He has been a very good player for us the last three years, and he’s had a great junior season. He’s been one of our captains this year, leading us into the position that we’re in this week. The guy has worked extremely hard in the offseason and made himself better.”
