Gerrit Cole used his right arm to make sure the UCLA baseball team got off on the right foot Friday night. The sophomore pitcher went eight innings, giving up only two runs and three hits to lead the Bruins to a 7-2 win over the Washington Huskies in Seattle.

Kimberly Lajcik/Daily Bruin Gerrit Cole was sharp on Friday night, striking out nine in eight innings to lead UCLA to a 7-2 win at Washington.

Cole started strong, facing the minimum amount of batters and surrendering no hits through the first five innings. Beau Amaral, Blair Dunlap and Cody Regis each cranked home runs to supply the support and help No. 12 UCLA (32-10, 8-8 Pac-10) jump out to a 5-0 lead.

With the nine strikeouts, Cole (7-2) equaled his total from last season (104) to become the first UCLA pitcher to reach 100 or more strikeouts in back-to-back seasons since Jim Parque did it in 1996 and 1997.

Sophomore second baseman Tyler Rahmatulla (hip flexor) returned to action after sitting out UCLA's 5-1 win at Pepperdine on Tuesday. He went 0 for 4 with a walk and a strikeout.
