Junior college transfers Darius Bell and Casey Griffiths have signed their scholarship papers and are on campus, UCLA announced on Thursday.

Bell, a sophomore quarterback and brother of former UCLA tailback Khalil Bell, played at City College of San Francisco last season. He threw for 1,982 yards and rushed for 751, amassing 32 total touchdowns (21 passing, 11 rushing).

The impressive numbers suggest Bell's dual-threat capacity, meaning he'd be an intriguing option for UCLA's new "pistol" formation. Remember what Florida was able to do with Chris Leak and Tim Tebow in 2006-07? Coach Urban Meyer gave Leak the a majority of the snaps, but called upon Tebow in short-yardage situations. The Gators won the BCS National Championship.

We're not necessarily saying Bell is the new Tebow or that UCLA will win it all -- but offensive coordinator Norm Chow at least has a new option. The strategy could keep Kevin Prince off his back and out of the trainer's room this season.

Griffiths, meanwhile, is a sophomore guard who earned All-American at American River College (Sacramento, Calif.) last season. He should soften the blow the offensive line took when sophomore backup guard Stanley Hasiak was deemed academically ineligible for the 2010 season.
