Freshman tailback Jordon James has been impressive since moving up to No. 3 on the depth chart this week.

James, who moved up since Derrick Coleman is out because of a concussion and a sprained neck, is showing the quickness and elusiveness that made him a highly-regarded recruit out of Corona High, but has been absent because he's dealt with a pulled hamstring since the beginning of fall camp.

James is back to full speed, but UCLA would prefer to redshirt him if it can. Coleman's injury may change that plan.

"We're down to three guys now," offensive coordinator Norm Chow said. "If somebody goes down, he needs to play. He’s a good player, he really is a good player. But the tough part is if you use him and then Derrick comes back and you don’t use him the rest of the year."

Coach Rick Neuheisel said that topic has crossed his mind quite a bit.

"I think about him a lot," Neuheisel said. "I want to make sure if we pull the trigger and he plays, he’s going to play a lot this year. He’s a very talented guy and we want to get the full enchilada so to speak with his eligibility."
