Richard Brehaut, making his first-career start, nearly doubled Kevin Prince’s total output from the team’s win at Texas last week (27 yards passing)... on the Bruins’ first drive of the game. Was it enough to stir a QB controversy in Westwood? Brehaut got more chances to throw, but overthrew often.
Johnathan Franklin and Derrick Coleman became the first pair of UCLA running backs to rush for 100 yards each since Khalil Bell and Chris Markey did it at Washington in 2007. The Bruins’ rushing output was also the most since the same game. How about that for an encore performance?
CIN THE TRENCHES
Consider it a small victory for the undersized Cougars. Center Ryan Taylor, the reigning Pac-10 offensive player of the week, embodied the UCLA’s newfound toughness on one play, blocking 25 yards down field despite losing his helmet seconds earlier. But the D-line did not pressure Jeff Tuel enough.
The resilient Cougars had exhausting scoring drives of 68, 71, 72 and 80 yards -- including one directly before and one right after halftime that brought them all the way back. UCLA’s secondary had a difficult time on deep routes and committed too many pass interference penalties.
Place kicker Kai Forbath was his old self, going 2 for 2 with field goals of 20 and 33 yards. UCLA’s kickoff coverage was solid once again, forcing Washington State into long fields. The Bruins made a stand in the fourth quarter, as the Cougars missed a field goal that would have made it tight.
Was there a letdown following the program-changing win at Texas? A close, one-possession lead in the waning minutes against arguably the worst team in the conference is an indication that there was. The coaching staff might take the heat for such a close call.
