UCLA returned to the practice field for the first time since losing to Washington last Thursday and the Bruins were more animated than one might have predicted after a disheartening 24-7 loss on national television.

It wasn't quite up to the level of intensity of two weeks ago, but the rare Monday night practice session showed that the Bruins clearly haven't given up on the season.

"I’m very proud of my football team to come out and practice like that tonight," coach Rick Neuheisel said. "I think it shows what kind of character that they have. It was spirited practice and a good practice. It’s a great start to what is obviously a very important game to us, so I’m pleased with our beginning."

A few tidbits:
  • Quarterback Richard Brehaut, who left the Washington game because of a concussion, went through the entire practice though he wore a red no-contact jersey. He said he'd wear red again Tuesday, but that he should be cleared for full contact Wednesday and is expecting to play Friday against Arizona State.
  • Linebacker Patrick Larimore will have surgery Wednesday to repair his dislocated shoulder. He said Dr. Neal ElAttrache at Kerlan Jobe Medical Center would perform the procedure and that he'd be sidelined for four to six months.
  • Neuheisel said he intended to call the Pac-10 office to discuss some things about the game at Washington, though he declined to provide details. "It's not something that needs to be addressed publicly," Neuheisel said. "It's things I think are necessary to share with the powers that be."
  • Neuheisel acknowledged he would have preferred to redshirt quarterback Darius Bell this season, but Brehaut's injury left him no choice but to go to the junior college transfer. "Both he and I wanted to redshirt," Neuheisel said. "But his diligence with the preparation will be exponentially increased and hopefully he'll be ready to roll if need be on Friday. It's a great lesson -- a painful lesson -- but it's a great lesson to everybody that you have to be totally ready to go."
