We go beyond the arc following UCLA's 75-59 victory against Montana State on Tuesday night:

1TRIP TO THE SMITHSONIAN

Freshman center Joshua Smith faults his lack of hustle. Coach Ben Howland blames Smith's inability to seal.

Whatever the reason, they both agree that the 6-foot-10 Smith needs the ball in his hands. It's about feeding the guy who has dropped more than 50 pounds since he arrived on campus in June.

Smith had possession in the half-court 11 times Tuesday night, though five of his touches came after offensive rebounds. That's just not enough for Howland.

"We have to keep doing a better job," he said. "He has to do a better job sealing. We want to get him the ball."

Said Smith: "A lot of times when I'm in the post, I'm just natural and standing there. It's on me to go down there and use my body."

2TWO POINTS TO MAKE

Before the season, Howland insisted that playing time for newcomer Lazeric Jones and junior Jerime Anderson would be split 50-50. That hasn't exactly been the case through 11 games.

Here's the breakdown: Jones, the starter, played 33 minutes on Tuesday and has averaged 27.8 per game; Anderson saw 14 minutes Tuesday and is at an average of 16.6 for the season. And despite the disparity, Anderson has a 31-29 edge in assists.

Both point guards were on the floor together for over six minutes Tuesday, something we'll probably see more of since UCLA lacks depth at guard.

Anderson did not attempt a shot, leaving the game with 13:18 remaining. "Anderson got hurt, I don't know what happened," Howland said. "I had Zeek (Lazeric) in there and he was playing well so I left him in. But I think that Jerime is OK."
