UCLA basketball coach Ben Howland said Friday that he's in "no hurry" to replace recently-departed assistant coach Scott Duncan.

Howland is in the middle of a recruiting period that lasts through April 20 and that has been his top priority. Once that ends, coaches and university officials are limited to the amount of off-campus contact they can have with potential recruits until July 5.

It makes sense for Howland to delay the hire until after the quiet period is over, especially if the list of potential candidates includes coaches who are not currently affiliated with an NCAA institution. If Howland were to make a hire before the quiet period ends, that coach would have to cease contact with recruits at the time of hiring.

"I’m in no rush and no hurry," Howland said.

Duncan left Howland's staff to join Larry Shyatt's staff at Wyoming. Duncan and Shyatt have been long-time friends.

"I’m happy for Scott, but I’m also excited about the opportunity to make a national search and bring in the best candidate possible to fit UCLA and fit our needs," Howland said.
