LOS ANGELES -- Trevor Bauer could have turned around, walked away and said nothing.

Instead, the UCLA right-hander mouthed something at Cal's Devon Rodriguez after beating him to first base and clinching the Bruins' 2-1 win Saturday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Rodriguez, a former teammate of Bauer's at Newhall Hart, didn't like what Bauer had to say and the benches cleared.

"There's been some history with us," Bauer said. "We played at the same high school and throughout the game we were going back and forth. It kind of just heated up with the game ending. ... It was a competitive game. Emotions kind of get heated in games like that."

Bauer (11-2) threw his seventh straight complete game, striking out eight batters and giving up five hits. He gave up a leadoff single in the ninth and Cal had the tying run on second with one out, but Bauer struck out Chad Bunting and got Rodriguez to ground out to the right side. Earlier in the game, Rodriguez had flied out to the wall and doubled to right.

With the win, UCLA (30-20, 15-8) stayed in third place in the Pac-10 standings, a game behind second-place Arizona State and two back of leader Oregon State. Cal (30-17, 13-10) sits in fourth place, two games behind UCLA.

The teams finish their three-game set on Sunday at 1 p.m. And, judging by the final out Saturday, things could get interesting.
