A day after one of his worst practice showings of training camp, quarterback Kevin Prince came back with one of his best.

His accuracy was up after working on fundamentals and footwork in a post-practice session Tuesday afternoon and the offense looked a lot more crips as a result.

"A better day today," Prince said. "The ball was flying where I wanted to go. That was encouraging and it’s a day to build on."

Coach Rick Neuheisel also came away impressed, though not satisfied. He said Prince struggled a bit with some of his reads in newly-installed plays and will need to keep progressing if he is to win the starting quarterback job.

"His biggest problem right now is taking too much protection time," Neuheisel said. "Not knowing the route thoroughly against the coverage that he’s seeing. ... If we can get his understanding of all that faster and his feet to move as quickly as his understanding can be then we’re going to be where we need to be."

Prince said the plays on which he struggled would sort themselves out with practice. The main thing, he said, was that he took a step forward after a slump of about three days.

"It was definitely a more relaxed day mentally today and more accurate," he said.

Richard Brehaut, Prince's competition for the quarterback spot, sat out of practice for the second consecutive day because of a sprained foot, but did some light throwing on the side and Neuheisel said he was hopeful for a return before the end of this week.

"He's healing more quickly than we anticipated," Neuheisel said. "He might be back tomorrow."
