UCLA quarterback Richard Brehaut, who broke his leg Oct. 8 against Washington State, is out of his walking boot and could return to practice as early as next week.

Brehaut, who had taken over as the starter for three games before the injury, has been riding an exercise bike at practice the last two days, is walking without any noticeable limp and has been in good spirits. He had an X-ray Wednesday and was awaiting the results.

"Hopefully we’ll get him back next week," coach Rick Neuheisel said. "He sounds optimistic. I’m going to wait and hear."

Kevin Prince has resumed his role as starter. He led UCLA to a 28-25 comeback victory after Brehuat was injured against Washington State and had 163 yards rushing last week in a 34-14 victory over California. In between, UCLA lost to Arizona, 48-12.

Brehaut has completed 66 of 119 passes for 935 yards and six touchdowns without an interception this season, but Neuheisel said he was unsure of how long it would take Brehaut to get back in the discussion for playing time.

"There is no way of telling," he said. "I have to wait and see him practice before I will know."
