Weekend roundup

A look at how some of UCLA's Olympic sports teams fared this weekend:

-- The five-time defending NCAA champion women's water polo team is at it again. The No. 5-seeded Bruins became the first such seeded team to win the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championship on Sunday, defeating No. 2-seeded USC 8-7 at the Spieker Aquatics Center. UCLA reached the title game after upsetting top-seeded Stanford on Saturday.

"The last time we played USC, exposed our weaknesses as a team," UCLA coach Brandon Brooks said. "After a team meeting, we came back refocused and had two weeks of practice and obviously made some improvements."

The NCAA tournament begins on May 14 in San Diego.

-- The No. 5-ranked UCLA softball team swept No. 18 Oregon at home, scoring 31 runs and cranking nine home runs in the three-game set. After losing five straight in early April, UCLA (36-9) has won nine straight. The Bruins host California (36-15) this weekend before traveling to perennial power Arizona (40-8) a week later. NCAA Regionals begin on May 21.

-- UCLA's track and field teams both lost to in dual meets against crosstown rival USC, the men 96-67 and the women 106-57.
