Expect some fresh faces on Saturday
By Peter Yoon
Bruins coach Rick Neuheisel says he expects to go a bit further into his depth chart against Stanford after noticing some of his defensive players dragging Saturday against Kansas State.
“The one thing we may want to do is try to give some guys a little bit more of a break,” Neuheisel said. “We played a lot of plays. There’s some young players that probably need to get a few snaps so that we can keep guys fresh.”
Nine players made their college debuts for UCLA on Saturday, but there were some notable players who didn’t. Freshman safety Dietrich Riley and freshman linebacker Jordan Zumwalt are listed as No. 2 on the depth chart, but neither got in the game against Kansas State.
Freshmen defensive linemen Seali'i Epenesa and Owamagbe Odighizuwa also did not get in the game while defensive lineman Cassius Marsh and redshirt defensive lineman Keenan Graham played sparingly.
Neuheisel says he expects to use some of those young players more in the coming weeks.
“There’s a reluctance to do that Week 1 because guys haven’t played,” Neuheisel said. “Guys who were playing their first time did some things that you’d not ever seen on the practice field, which is the norm.
"You try to coach as hard as you can to keep it from happening, but it’s still part of the growing up process. We’ve got to grow up these kids fast so that we can spell guys and keep guys as fresh as possible.”
