Here are a few notes and links:
> The UCLA and USC recruiting battle will be judged by whoever ESPN 150 player Dietrich Riley chooses to sign with Wednesday. Gary Klein of the Los Angeles Times wrote an informative piece on the defensive back from La Canada, Calif. According to Klein, Riley has yet to make up his mind. It just goes to show how tough the process can be for a high school prospect.
> On Tuesday, the Pacific-10 Conference coaches selected UCLA baseball to finish third in the standings this season, behind Arizona State and Oregon State, respectively. The Sun Devils received seven first-place votes and the Beavers got two. The Bruins have finished in third place for three straight years. The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association of America pegged UCLA at No. 27 in its preseason poll Monday.
>UCLA baseball will hold its annual Alumni Game this Saturday (Feb. 6) at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The weather forecast calls for a 70 percent chance of rain, so the festivities may be moved to the Jack Gifford hitting facility beyond the right field fence (as it was last season). Former Bruins and current big leaguers Garrett Atkins and Casey Jansen, among others, showed up last year.
> Basketball coach Ben Howland will welcome U.S. Ryder Cup captain and UCLA alum Corey Pavin to his weekly press conference on Tuesday. Howland will present Pavin with a personalized basketball jersey, while Pavin will present Howland with a Ryder Cup golf bag. Pavin, the 1982 NCAA Player of the Year, is in town for this weekend's Northern Trust Open at Riviera Country Club.
