Several Pac-12 programs have an opportunity to make statements on the recruiting trail this weekend, headlined by Arizona State hosting Washington, and including USC's trip to Notre Dame and the biggest clash in the conference -- UCLA visiting Stanford. The following day, the B2G West Coast Bowl will draw plenty of interest, as Pac-12 commits and targets are separated into two teams for the late January all-star game.

SAN BERNARDINO--UCLA offensive lineman Chris Ward has taken a medical retirement and left training camp, coach Jim Mora said Thursday.

Ward, a junior who started three games last season and was expected to challenge for a string guard spot this season, has dealt with numerous injuries over the last year and has been out since spring with a bad back. He also suffered a knee injury last season that required surgery.

"He’s decided that he is going to medically DQ," Mora said. "He left yesterday and will take care of all the paperwork today or tomorrow."

Ward will be able to remain on scholarship and finish school at UCLA, but he won't count against the NCAA limit of 85 scholarships.

Injury updates: Linebacker Jordan Zumwalt, out since Monday because of heat-related illness, attempted to return to practice Thursday morning, but left after about an hour when he suffered a relapse. ... Freshman receiver Javon Williams also left the morning session with heat-related symptoms. ... Offensive lineman Brett Downey returned from heat illness, but did only light drills before going back inside. ... Defensive lineman Brandon Tuliaupupu has a sprained AC joint and is out indefinitely.
