Agholor has the formula to success

USC freshman receiver Nelson Agholor has two models to follow for his upcoming collegiate debut that's so quickly approaching.

Current Trojans Robert Woods and Marqise Lee have set the tone for freshman wideouts at USC over the past two fall seasons, and head coach Lane Kiffin has expressly laid out how Agholor can match each of those players' initial impacts this year.

Now, it's his job to execute what he's been told -- which he's done fairly well thus far.

"I'm part of a really prestigious wide receiving corps, and those guys have all done great things because of the way they approach the game, the way they learn and the way they compete," Agholor said on Monday in his first media session at USC. "I'm really just trying to follow their lead."

He will certainly be following them in the receiving depth chart. Woods and Lee are entrenched as the Trojans' No. 1 and No. 2 receivers, and Agholor is competing with three older players for the right to join them in three- and four-receiver sets in 2012.

So far, he'd be either the Trojans' fourth or fifth receiver, with veteran De'Von Flournoy performing well to earn the No. 3 lead and second-year players George Farmer and Victor Blackwell challenging as well.

But, as Kiffin said on Monday following USC's practice, Agholor still has nearly two weeks left until Game 1 against Hawaii on Sept. 1. If he can match the improvement he made over the last two weeks -- essentially since the start of camp -- over the next ones, he might be able to overtake Flournoy.

Agholor said he's been learning a lot from Kiffin. Most new freshmen praise their head coach for leadership and overall guidance, but Agholor has been gaining that sort of knowledge from Kiffin and some receiver-specific stuff he has applied to the field.

"He does a great job with explaining it to the younger guys and stressing the importance of tutorials within yourself, studying by yourself and paying attention to close details on everything that he pretty much maps out for us," Agholor said of Kiffin. "He gives you the formula to success. We have to take advantage of it."

Agholor was asked if he planned to follow in Woods and Lee's collective lead this season. He didn't say he didn't plan to do so, but he also made it sound like he has other goals for the 2012 season -- for himself and for his team.

"I'm here to help these guys out," Agholor said. "It would be wonderful to have a season like both of those guys, but I'm Nelson Agholor, and I'm here to compete and help the Trojans do well this season."
