The best receivers in the nation?

Never mind the loss of Damian Williams to the NFL. Forget Ronald Johnson's nagging wrist and elbow injuries. Don't worry about David Ausberry's inability to make the simple catch

According to USC cornerback Shareece Wright, the Trojans have the best receivers in the nation.

Wright, a fifth-year senior, told reporters after Saturday's game that the USC defense was benefiting from scrimmaging all spring long against some of the best offensive players in the country — and the best receivers, he made a note to say.

"If we can stop them and stop [quarterback] Matt Barkley, then we're doing a pretty good job," Wright said.

The speedy, instinctive Wright has been a projected starter each of the last two seasons for the Trojans but has started only three games. In 2008, he started against Virginia and Ohio State but suffered a hairline fracture in his neck while preparing for Oregon State. In 2009, he missed all but the Emerald Bowl due to academic ineligibility.

Still, Wright is being counted on as the leader within the USC secondary, and he's taking the responsibility seriously.

"As a defense as a whole, we want to be the best defense," Wright said. "We have the coaching staff to be the best defense in the nation and we have the players to do it. We've just got to work hard every day — we can't take a day off, and that's my expectation for the defense."

Understandable. But the receivers, the best in the nation? Really?

"I feel like everybody here is the top players in the nation, if you're getting recruited by SC," Wright said. "If you're here as a receiver, I feel that way about our players. I don't know what other receivers are like around the nation, but I know what these guys are like, and I think they're the best.

"If I can stop these guys, I can stop anybody."
