Notes, quotes and video from Tuesday's practice, an ultra-quick final walk-through before USC departs to Hawaii:
  • No pads for the Trojans on Tuesday, as the squad sped through a 90-minute practice -- focused highly on special teams -- with a seeming lack of intensity. Roughly 15 minutes before practice was set to come to an end, the entire offensive unit was sent out of Howard Jones Field and forced to re-enter with a new mentality. Said coach Lane Kiffin: "They weren't right. They were very comfortable. They weren't crisp and that's how you get beat."
  • Defensive end Nick Perry, who suffered a high ankle sprain in practice nearly three weeks ago, has not been able to make a full return to the practice field yet for the Trojans and is considered a game-time decision for Thursday's game at Hawaii. Kiffin listed him as "limited" on Tuesday's injury report -- as he has in recent days. Remember, Perry's injury was what prompted Kiffin's switch to a tackle-free practice style for the duration of camp.
  • Offensive lineman Abe Markowitz, listed as the primary backup to center Kristofer O'Dowd on the depth chart released Friday, underwent surgery Tuesday morning on his broken foot. Kiffin said it went "very well," and Markowitz is still expected back in six to seven weeks.
  • The rest of the injury report: cornerback T.J. Bryant, safety Drew McAllister, quarterback Mitch Mustain and running back D.J. Morgan were "limited." Tight end Xavier Grimble is "out", as are a few other players with long-term injuries that Kiffin will no longer list on his daily reports -- among them linebackers Marquis Simmons and Hayes Pullard.
  • Kiffin, on what will erase the many questions he still has about his team: "Playing well. Tackling on defense, not turning the ball over on offense, and not trying to do too much because of the anticipation of finally playing, because it's finally here. Now guys are going above and beyond what they're coached to do -- we're going to have to have great composure."
  • Linebacker Malcolm Smith, on he and Michael Morgan being named captains in a rare tie by their teammates, in a vote released on Monday: "I mean, who knows if it was an exact tie? Whatever it was, it's an honor to be respected by our teammates like that. We just try to do the right thing all the time, and it's working out for us so far. We're going to try to continue doing the same things."
  • Final notes: The Trojans left campus before 5 p.m. to arrive at LAX at 5:30, where a 7 p.m. flight to Hawaii awaited. ... A walk-through had been scheduled for Wednesday afternoon at Aloha Stadium but USC canceled it on Monday.

Kiffin spoke to the media after Tuesday's practice.

The coach sounded no different than he has sounded all this week and last, again comparing the Trojans' game with Hawaii to Appalachian State's 2007 upset of Michigan and again stating that actually getting on the field won't be so much of a thrill -- as you would expect considering his comments at his news conference on the day he arrived in January -- but a relief.

"It's kind of different than I pictured it that day, because of everything we've gone through since then," he said. "There's going to be a lot more of a relief to finally get to it than an excitement level."

Quarterback Matt Barkley will start his second consecutive season opener for the Trojans in a matter of roughly 48 hours, and the sophomore has his gaze focused solely on the matchup with Hawaii -- not any of the many distractions that come from playing in a place like Hawaii.
