HONOLULU -- Matt Barkley, Marc Tyler and USC's receivers have looked great through one half of play here at Aloha Stadium.
The Trojans' defense? Not so much.
For the first half, Barkley completed 15-of-19 passes for 190 yards and four touchdowns, connecting on his first seven attempts and 11 of his first 12. Tyler, making his first career start for the Trojans, carried the ball 11 times for 70 yards.
Hawaii quarterback Bryant Moniz has completed 13-of-28 passes for 179 yards and a touchdown while also running seven times for 42 yards. The Warriors' lead rusher is Alex Green, who carried the ball four times for 42 yards in the first half.
Curiously, the Trojans attempted only one PAT, choosing to go for the two-point conversion after their first three touchdowns. Hawaii struggled offensively at the start, punting on two of its first three drives. But the Warriors turned it up in the second quarter when Moniz started scrambling effectively -- 40 yards on four rushes for three first downs on one drive -- and showcasing some apparent holes within the Trojans' linebacking corps.
Hawaii receiver Kealoha Pilares caught a mid-range pass from Moniz and took it all the way to the end zone for a score, getting the Warriors as close as 20-13. But the Trojans quickly responded, sparked by a 30-yard kickoff return by freshman standout Robert Woods. Barkley connected on four passes while running a no-huddle offense, finding Ronald Johnson for a 13-yard score to make it 27-13.
Hawaii appeared to score in its one-minute drill offense when Moniz found Greg Salas, but officials appeared to rule that he had come up just short after review. Hawaii coach Greg McMackin then made a questionable decision to go for the field goal from inside the one-yard line, making the score 27-16 at the break.
Nickell Robey leads USC's defense with four tackles; Hawaii safety Mana Silva leads all players with six. Neither team has forced a turnover.
