Every time a coach gets fired or moves on to another job, a small army of people have to find new homes.
It's not only each of the assistant coaches, but all those coaches' families. Lane Kiffin, a coach's kid, knows that as well as anyone.
From the time he was born until he graduated high school, he lived in seven cities, his father Monte coaching for eight different teams, college and pro. They lived in Lincoln, Neb. for a while, then Fayatteville, Ark., then Raleigh, N.C. then Green Bay, Wis., then Buffalo, N.Y., then Minneapolis, then New York, then Minneapolis again.
So, is this weekend's trip to Minnesota a homecoming for Lane?
"Everywhere we play seems to be home," Kiffin said. "It is a place I went to three years of high school at and still know a lot of people there. It's a really unique place, a special place with off-the-charts friendly people, a great place to raise kids. I've got nothing but good memories there."
Kiffin played football, basketball and baseball at Bloomington Jefferson High.
He interviewed in 2007 for the University of Minnesota head-coaching job that went to Tim Brewster. Kiffin was hired shortly thereafter by the Oakland Raiders.
