USC kicked off the mid-year signing period by signing six recruits Wednesday, taking the first steps to assembling its 2011 recruiting class.

All six players are expected to enroll at the school in January 2011 and participate in spring practice. Included are two junior college players -- both with histories at other major colleges -- and four high school seniors, including two quarterbacks.

Offensive lineman David Garness (Anchorage, Ak./City College of San Francisco) and cornerback Isiah Wiley (West Monroe, La./Arizona Western JC) are the two JC players; both signed official letters of intent.

Garness was a walk-on at Hawaii in 2008 but did not play; Wiley committed to Alabama out of high school but did not qualify. Both were fairly recent recruits, as Wiley committed over the weekend and Garness on Monday.

The high schoolers are quarterbacks Cody Kessler (Bakersfield, Calif./Centennial) and Max Wittek (Newport Beach, Calif./Mater Dei), fullback Soma Vainuku (Eureka, Calif./Eureka) and kicker Andre Heidari (Bakersfield, Calif./Stockdale).

Vainuku signed with USC last February but did not qualify for admission in the fall. Kessler, Wittek and Heidari have all been long-time Trojan commits.

In a news release, USC coach Lane Kiffin said he expected "several more" players to sign as early enrollees with USC. The Trojans have at least three more openings, and none of these players will count against an NCAA-mandated limit of 15 for the 2011 recruiting class that enrolls in August.
