Former USC tailback Stafon Johnson filed a lawsuit against the university and former assistant strength coach Jamie Yanchar in Los Angeles Superior Court Monday, alleging negligence on behalf of Yanchar and the university.
Johnson and his lawyers are alleging that Yanchar -- contrary to what was initially reported about the incident -- accidentally knocked a 275-pound bench-press bar out of Johnson's hands in September 2009.
"What we say occurred is that the bar was basically knocked out of his hand, causing it to fall on Stafon's neck, almost causing him to die," Johnson's lawyer, Carl Douglas, said at a news conference Monday afternoon. "We think for that, those that are responsible should be held responsible for their actions."
