Santa Ana Mater Dei guard Katin Reinhardt, the 58th-ranked high school junior in the country according to ESPNU, has decommitted from USC, his father told ESPNLosAngeles.com Tuesday night.

Reinhardt, who averaged 17.5 points per game this season in helping the Monarchs to a CIF State title, had committed to the Trojans in December. But, over the last four weeks, he had experienced a sort of buyer's remorse about making an early commitment without officially visiting the school. Bryce Jones' transfer just months after enrolling at USC also appeared to have played a role in his decision.

Tuesday, Reinhardt and his father, Ernie, called USC coach Kevin O'Neill and expressed a desire to re-open his recruitment, hoping to keep the Trojans in the mix but also consider other schools. They received a different response than they expected, O'Neill telling them USC would no longer consider Reinhardt as a potential recruit.

"Our comment to him was we want to make sure that USC is the right fit in all aspects for Katin," Ernie Reinhardt said by phone. "With that comment I thought they would continue to pursue Katin to reassure that USC was the right fit.

"So when they said USC wasn't going to recruit him anymore, we were surprised."

Reinhardt, a 6-5, 190-pound combo guard, was the Trojans' top-rated recruit in the class of 2012. He is expected to begin officially visiting potential schools in August, as mandated by the NCAA, and make his decision sometime after November.

Three recent Mater Dei products have decided to transfer within a year of arriving at their college destinations, Cal-turned-Baylor guard Gary Franklin and UNC-turned-UCLA forwards David and Travis Wear. Reinhardt, who considered UCLA and Syracuse among a host of other schools before making his initial decision, clearly took that into account.

"He said, 'Dad, I don't want to transfer.' " Ernie Reinhardt said of his son. "I want to make sure the school I go to is a 100 percent commitment."

USC now has just one player verbally committed in its class of 2012: 6-2 guard Larry Lewis of Scottsdale, Ariz., a three-star prospect according to ESPNU.
