Matt Barkley alters throwing motion

Fresh off his Tuesday visit to ESPN headquarters in Bristol, Conn., USC quarterback Matt Barkley rejoined his Trojan teammates at a players-only summer workout on Howard Jones Field on Thursday and made up for his day away from the team, making the majority of throws in a 90-minute throwing session.

He demonstrated a slightly adjusted throwing motion that he has been focusing on implementing this summer -- a more over-the-top type movement that has him throwing the ball with more zip to his receivers and feeling more comfortable doing it.

It's not a super-noticeable change, but it's a change all the same.

"I mean, I've naturally been up there for my whole career," Barkley said after the workout. "But, for whatever reason, I was focusing on other things last year and got away from it and so I've gotten back to that recently, and that's helped a lot."

Backing up Barkley at quarterback are freshmen Cody Kessler, Max Wittek, Jesse Scroggins and walk-on John Manoogian. Kessler seemed to take on the majority of the responsibility with Barkley not there on Tuesday.

Barkley took at least three-quarters of the snaps in Thursday's session, delivering on-target passes in tough situations to receivers like Markeith Ambles and Robert Woods. The new motion seemed to aid him in making the out-route throw he has sometimes struggled with in his college career. His passes were, in general, quite crisp.

Said Barkley of the motion: "It's helped with coming over the top a lot and not dropping the ball a lot, trying to flick it and get some more spin on it."

USC continues to do players-only throwing sessions every Tuesday and Thursday for the duration of the summer, until fall camp begins in early August. Currently in the afternoon, the sessions will move to the early-morning hours when the players begin official afternoon workouts with the coaches in July.
