Prepping for possible weather

You can't always get what you want.

But USC Trojans head coach Lane Kiffin did on Wednesday when his team practiced in an atypical downpour, just as he'd hoped.

There's a fairly high likelihood that three of the Trojans' next four games will be played in inclement weather, with road games at Cal, Notre Dame and Colorado all approaching. So he wanted his players to get a sense of what it'd be like to play in it.

And they got that sense Wednesday, working for two hours in constant rain that affected throwing and traction. At the end of the session, the Trojans still had to do the so-called Trojan Time sessions that involve a series of football-field-length sprints. It was a struggle in the weather, but they completed them.

"The weather was good for us to have," Kiffin said Wednesday. "We haven’t really dealt with bad weather much, so it was good especially for our skill guys to have to work in this with obviously a possibility of that coming up with a couple road games on our schedule.

"It was good to get through this. No major injuries today and hopefully we get healthy and now everything from here on out will go towards Cal.”

The last time it rained in-season like it did Wednesday was also on a bye week, last year leading up to the Oregon game.

The actual game was precipitation-free. But this year's post-bye game, in the Bay Area, could be different.
