Thursday practice report
By Pedro Moura
Some quick notes from Thursday's practice:
- By the looks of things, receiver Ronald Johnson is out for the rest of spring practice because of a minor wrist injury. Johnson told reporters it was nothing big, but he'll undergo an MRI exam Friday and could have a minor surgery — similar to what quarterback Matt Barkley had earlier this year — in the next week or so. Coach Lane Kiffin downplayed the impact of Johnson's absence, indicating that the senior had already shown his abilities earlier on in practice.
- More injury updates: Both running back Dillon Baxter and offensive tackle Matt Kalil were forced to miss practice because of lingering knee injuries. Both are still believed to be day-to-day. Redshirt freshman cornerback Torin Harris attempted to suit up but sat out for the most of the 2 1/2-hour practice; defensive end Armond Armstead and running back Curtis McNeal left the field because of injuries during practice.
- Practice highlights: Walk-on safety Ryan McMahon intercepted a tipped pass and ran it back for a touchdown during seven-on-seven drills; tight end David Ausberry moonlighted as a receiver and came up with a few solid receptions. In Johnson's place, redshirt sophomore Brice Butler served as the No. 1 receiver and did the job well, collecting a number of catches in team play.
- University president-designate C.L. Max Nikias attended practice for the first time this spring alongside Ed Roski, USC donor and chairman of USC's board of trustees.
