Halftime: USC 42, Washington 32
By Pedro Moura
It has been a strong 20 minutes for USC at the Galen Center.
The Trojans haven't trailed, opening up on a 19-6 run before fighting off mini-runs from Washington to maintain a 10-point lead at the break, 42-32.
Forward Marcus Johnson leads the Trojans with 10 points. Point guard Mike Gerrity and forward Alex Stepheson have chipped in with eight apiece.
For the Huskies, point guard Venoy Overton is proving very active on the floor, making five of nine shots for a first-half high 12 points.
USC has limited Washington's talented guard tandem of Isaiah Thomas and Quincy Pondexter to five points in 11 shots.
A key sequence occurred with five minutes left in the half. With USC leading 34-22, Washington forward Justin Holiday converted a 20-foot jumper. Gerrity took the inbounds pass and ran with it, going coast-to-coast for a dynamic layup that got the Galen Center crowd roaring. The Huskies appeared to unravel a bit from there, as they were called for an offensive foul on their next possession.
USC guard Dwight Lewis missed considerable time in the first half because of foul trouble.
The Trojans are shooting 61 percent from the field to Washington's 40 percent.
