DE James Boyd no longer with team

By Pedro Moura

Defensive end James Boyd is no longer with the USC Trojans football team and is not on the spring practice roster, a school spokesperson confirmed Monday.

Boyd, a redshirt sophomore, cleaned out his locker late last week, sources said. But he and head coach Lane Kiffin have butted heads on various issues, and Boyd has apparently cleaned out his locker on multiple occasions since Kiffin arrived at USC last January.

He was also suspended for academic issues in November and did not finish the season with the team.

Boyd, 20, began at USC as a tight end before switching to defensive end at the start of last year's spring practice. He then switched to quarterback midway through the spring sessions and stayed there for approximately two months before moving back to defensive end last June.

He didn't practice with the team while redshirting in 2009 because of a knee sprain and did not record a tackle last season while playing sparingly.

He was supposed to walk on to the basketball team in 2009 but couldn't because of the injury. Last year, he told reporters he again intended to walk on, but basketball coach Kevin O'Neill said in December that he and Kiffin decided Boyd would be better off focusing on academics.

Boyd is still enrolled at USC.
