Halftime: Cal 30, USC 27
By Pedro Moura
It has been a game of runs so far here at the Galen Center.
Cal was up 20-17 at the midway point of the first half, then proceeded to go on a 10-0 run to stretch its lead to 30-17.
From there, though, the Trojans went on a 10-0 run to make the halftime score 30-27.
What sparked USC was a dynamic block by Alex Stepheson of a Jerome Randle layup. USC played with energy for the rest of the half — especially on the final possession, when guard Dwight Lewis blocked a Cal shot with 12 seconds left and took the ball back the length of the court for a layup.
Neither team has been successful from the field. Cal, led by Randle's 12 points, is shooting just 43 percent. USC' is shooting 39 percent.
Lewis leads USC with nine points and three other Trojans have at least four points. Cal has been led by nine points from guard Patrick Christopher and six from forward Jamal Boykin.
The Trojans had a highlight-reel play late in the first half when forward Marcus Johnson blocked a Max Zhang shot front of the basket. The 7-foot-3 Zhang is nine inches taller than the 6-foot-6 Johnson.
To give you a sense of scenery, USC is wearing its gold jerseys tonight.
