Barkley makes Davey O'Brien watch list
By Pedro Moura
Junior quarterback Matt Barkley was named to the 2011 Davey O'Brien Award watch list Friday, one of 38 NCAA signal-callers honored with a preseason nomination for the top honor given out exclusively to quarterbacks.
Barkley, 20, was an O'Brien semifinalist in 2010 after a sophomore season in which he passed for nearly 2800 yards, 26 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He's one of 10 former semifinalists or finalists on the watch list again this year -- a mini-list that includes Stanford's Andrew Luck, Boise State's Kellen Moore and Oregon's Darron Thomas.
Luck, Thomas and Barkley are three of the five Pac-12 quarterbacks on the list. Arizona's Nick Foles and Utah's Jordan Wynn were also nominated.
Auburn's Cam Newton won it last season before leaving for the NFL, where he was selected first overall by the Carolina Panthers. Newton also won the Maxwell Award, which Barkley is nominated for this year, too.
The O'Brien watch-list nomination is USC's 13th of the preseason. Other Trojans nominated include receiver Robert Woods, tight end Rhett Ellison, left tackle Matt Kalil, center Khaled Holmes, defensive end Nick Perry, middle linebacker Chris Galippo and safety T.J. McDonald.
