USC: James Grant
It was an antsy Thursday for USC fans as rumors concerning the impending NCAA sanctions lingered. Here's a brief recap of the day:
- Following initial reports that the sanctions would be announced Friday, the ETA was pushed back a bit Thursday, likely to at least the start of next week. USC's campus television station, ATVN, reported that USC officials said the NCAA report would not come Friday.
- Reached Thursday evening, USC media relations director James Grant confirmed the ATVN report, citing NCAA protocol of informing schools 48 hours before a report is to be released. Said Grant: Based on what the NCAA does, there is no chance the report is coming out [Friday]. He also said he expected the university would receive the report from the NCAA 24 hours before it was announced publicly — which has yet to happen, of course.
- In other news, the USC men's golf team finished up at the Honors Course in Chattanooga, Tenn., closing out the NCAA Championships in 15th place and ending its week early. Freshman T.J. Vogel, often the Trojans' top performer this season, shot a 3-under 69 on Thursday but USC still fell well short of the top-eight finish needed to qualify for match play Friday-Sunday. The Trojans' collective 289 Thursday was their best of the three days after a 295 Tuesday and 290 Wednesday. Individually, Vogel finished in a tie for 25th place, while sophomore Steve Lim tied for 41st to lead USC competitors.
